Language & Literacy

Literacy focuses on developing each child’s ability to understand and use language as an integral part of learning in all areas in order to interact effectively with the world around them, to express themselves creatively and to communicate confidently (through Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing) using a variety of skills and media. Language and Literacy are fundamental prerequisites for thinking, learning and interacting in personal, social and work contexts throughout life. Literacy is therefore a key to learning as well as a key to enjoyment and personal growth.

To promote and develop enthusiasm and passion for reading, we at St. Finlough's Primary School, promote the use of the Accelerated Reading Programme.

Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice while promoting reading for pleasure.

"At its heart, Accelerated Reader is simple."

A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills.  Accelerated Reader produces “particularly positive effects” according to an independent study by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and Durham University.

“The internet-based programme increased the reading age of pupils by three additional months in just 22 weeks."

Our children have access to a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction books in our well stocked library. We also have computers in every classroom and IPads to support and enhance learning.

The mobile library visits the school every fortnight and the children are given the opportunity to borrow books to enjoy at home.
